Many crafters feel hesitant about using materials like resin due to environmental concerns. I faced the same struggle when deciding to use resin in my jewelry-making projects. I’ve written out a short list of how I addressed these concerns and found ways to minimize waste.
Tips:
- Pre-mix your paint and medium: Use repurposed condiment bottles to pre-mix paint and mediums like Floetrol.
- Repurpose containers and cups: Save and reuse containers like your morning latte cup or an old yogurt container for mixing resin.
- Reuse your gloves: Clean your gloves with alcohol and paper towels to extend their usability.
- Use an apron or overalls: Wipe your hands on an apron or overalls instead of using paper towels.
- Protect your workspace: Cover your work surface with a reusable clear shower curtain.
- Utilize leftover resin: Keep a silicon mold handy to create small items like magnets or ornaments with leftover resin.
- Conscious shipping: Use sustainable packaging materials like paper mailers, compostable mailers, biodegradable packing peanuts, shredded paper, or repurposed bubble wrap.
- DIY cleaning supplies: Make your own cleaning supplies using a reusable bottle with a mix of 3 parts water, 1 part vinegar, and a few drops of essential oil.
- Give back to causes supporting the environment: Donating your time or money to charities and organizations trying to make a difference when it comes to the environment will go a long way. a portion of all my sales go to the National Park Foundation since I believe in their mission and its a small way I can make a big impact.
There are plenty of ways to cut waste and approach resin art in a more sustainable way. Do research, give back when you can, and create a more beautiful world along the way. As I continue to explore sustainable art practices, I hope to deepen my understanding and find even more ways to integrate them into my work and add to this list.
I wanted to make this article short and sweet so you can take in the ideas fast and implement them. Just remember – every little bit counts. Spreading the word on this issue is one of the best ways to make a difference in this area, so share your own ways you practice sustainable practices in your craft!
